Last game of the season was at the picturesque Flinders Golf Club. The weather forecast had a familiar look to it, with the feeling that we would be getting pissed on.
There was a fair bit on the line today, with player of the year, naga of the year, and the annual Animalia cup all up for grabs.
Before tee-off, it was noted that Baby Koala was a no-show and Stork was asking the question “which one of you is here to come second?” alluding to his early confidence. Both of these markers would play a major part in the day later on.
For half the round the weather was fine, but our slim hopes of getting to the end dry were dashed very quickly as the heavens opened up for the rest of the day.
Big kudos to all the lads for toughing it out and finishing their round. All the lads except one that is.
Big Stork, who reportedly had some kit issues, with bags going over and umbrellas exiting the course, coupled with some shit-show golf was enough to tip the big man over the edge and after only 11 holes dragged his sorry arse back to his car and went home.
This poor display earned him a DNF and was thus awarded the naga of the day, much to the joy of a couple of members who had found the going a wee bit tough.
Surprisingly, the scoring was quite high considering the conditions with 5 players scoring 36 points and over. Top of the pile, was the late inclusion of Deeks, who has previous shown good form over said track and come home in the last group to post a score of 41 points to take home the Animalia Cup.
Nearest the pins went to Taffy (3rd) and (12th), Girdy (9th), Redder (14th) and Tich (17th).
The presentations quickly turned to the annual awards. Prior to tee-off, Barra gave the members the heads up that 4 people were in the mix for naga of the year, and another 4 in the mix for player of the year.
The scoring on the day had no bearing on the outcome of either of the prestigious awards. However, one of the naga nominees, Baby Koala was sitting in 2nd spot by a comfortable 1½ points but his late call-off earned him 2 points towards his tally, thus taking out the naga of the year.
Final standings were; Baby Koala – 9 points, Tich – 8 ½ points and Stork – 8 points were the place getters for the season.
As mentioned, the scoring at Flinders was to have no bearing on the outcome for the Ann Lee claret jug. Hubba could only tie for first at worst, but as it stood the big man was to stand alone once again take home the goods.
Final standings were; Hubba – 8 points, Redder, Girdy and Billy A. all finishing with 5 points each.
Handicap adjustments to finish off the season were as follows; Deeks 19 to 17, Stork 12 to 13, Mitch 19 to 20, Clayton 38 to 39 and Hubba 22 to 20.
The event management catering was ably handled by Koala and the late to the show Baby Koala.
All in all, another great season for the MGC. Big thanks to the tireless steering committee for continually bringing the troops together on a monthly basis. Also to all who donated prizes and their time, and all those who participated throughout the season.
