Round 7 – Andy Mac Memorial 8

Another year goes by as we converge down at Cape Schanck to celebrate the life of Andy Mac and play his annual memorial game for the 8th time.
To open the day Barra said a few words while welcoming a couple of new faces. First up was Joe’s nephew Jamie who had flown in from Scotland only a matter of hours earlier that morning. Also joining us for the first time in this event was John Broadley.
We were also very pleased to have Macca join us, making the day just a wee bit more special.
Due to some hard work and overwhelming generousity the prize pool was bursting at the seams.
As always, 1st, 2nd and 3rd was up for grabs along with the 5 par 3s (including the prestigious 14th, Andy Mac hole). This year the A. Mac hole carried an added incentive of a $500 hole in one cash bonus. That was always going to a non-event with the clientele on hand.
Another new addition to the day was to be a prize for the group with the highest aggregate stableford score for the day.

Jamie must have been a wee bit delirious with jet lag as he pulled out some rather disturbing golf balls stamped with the Rangers logo, highlighting how lucky they would be for him. Unfortunately for the young fireman from Glasgow, this proved to be not the case. In fact these golf balls had much difficulty getting past the ladies tees, on 3 occasions no less. By the end of the round these balls were left buried on the course for some other sucker to find.
They say, it’s much harder to defend the title than to win it. This couldn’t have been truer for Baby Koala, 40 points last year but could only muster a pitiful 20 points this year to go from top to bottom and take home the naga for the day.
A couple of faces always in the mix at this event were Hubba (dual winner) and Tommy (serial prize collector). Last month Hubba got it all wrong in the handicap management department, hanging on to Scott’s coat tails for the pairs win, thus enduring a one shot cut. This extra shot would have given him 38 today with 20 points on the back 9 for the count back win. However, he still carded a very good 37 points for the day to be runner up and take home a $200 Drummond voucher, sleeve prov1s, golf cap and some embarrassing footwear.
For handicap management, Tommy was to go one better. He ditched his official handicap some time ago and steadily manoeuvred his social one out considerably to position himself to have a red hot go at the title. Cruising round the course racking up the points, 32 with 5 holes to play, it looked in the bag for the young Yorkshireman, until he got to the Andy Mac par-3 14th. This would be his undoing. 1 point in the next 4 holes saw his dreams and the title, slip from his grasp. Although he did salvage a par on the last to record a decent score of 36 points for the day. Yet again, it was ‘what could have been’ for bridesmaid Tommy to finish 3rd. He did get a big sugar hit to lift his spirits though, taking home the large sweetie hamper, sleeve prov1s and golf cap.
A couple of years ago, Taffy was the unbackable bookies favourite to take the honours with his generous handicap at the time. On that occasion the pressure proved too much and he faded into the pack. But the big man was to make amends this time round. A more than solid front and back pair of 19s to lay down 38 points for the pack to chase. No one could reel the big Welshman in and today would be his day finishing 1st to don the jacket, scoop the prize pool ( round of golf for 4 at Rossdale, Cape Schanck polo shirt, prov1s, hamper, golf hat, whisky to name but a few) and take home the trophy.
Nearest the pins went as follows; Mitch 3rd hole (red wine, sleeve prov1s). Gav 4th hole (Titleist hat, sleeve prov1s). Kev 7th hole (polo shirt sleeve prov1s). Stewy 14th Andy Mac hole (litre vodka, sleeve prov1s, shirt, Scottish fireman’s merch). Redder 16th hole (litre vodka, sleeve prov1s).

The new competition added this year was to tally all four 4 scores in each group to see which group had the highest total. This turned out to be a very close call, with the team of Girdy, Billy A. Gav and Jamie with a total score of 122 points winning a round 4 at Mornington Golf Club.
The handicap adjustments saw Taffy go from 20 to 18, baby Koala 22 to 23, Alan 37 to 38, Tich 20 to 21 and Clayton 36 to 37.
Event management on the day was admirably served by Tich with his infamous chicken curry and Tommy dishing up a selection of cheesecakes and ice cream.
Once again, a massive thank you to all who so generously donated to the prize pool and also to all those who turned out and took part in such a special day, fantastic.
