Round 6 – Sunday, 15th February, 2026

Ringwood @ 8.40 am

Format: Pairs (9 drives each)

A very frantic week for the organisers in the lead up to this month’s game. With Barra withdrawing due to a knee injury, it was a crazy scramble to find a replacement worthy of the wee man’s jersey.

That proved to be a bridge too far, but we did find Dave who admirably stepped in at short notice to avoid the field resorting to a singles event.

Only the clubs second time at Ringwood, and by all accounts from the members, certainly won’t be the last, very favourable reports indeed.

With the pairs event requiring nine drives from each player, the strategy would fall heavily on the team captains. Many teams finding a bit of difficulty towards the end as certain players struggled to find the fairway when needed most. None more so than Redder, who couldn’t get his tee shot past the ladies tee on the 18th.

It also seemed to be the day for early predictions. Macster and Tich declaring that the naga team would be coming out of their own group as they went head to head with Scott and Hubba.

Big Stork wasn’t to be left out as he called for the organisers to give him the numbers for the par 3s, he picked the 5th as the hole he’d be cleaning up on. Needless to say, he landed 30m short of the green.

As the last groups come in, there were only 4½ shots separating the entire field of 8 teams.

But the Macster did predict correctly as himself and Tich were to pip Billy A. and Koala by ¼ of a shot to take home the naga trophy. Upon presentation Tich exorcised his right as captain, to lay the blame squarely at the feet of Macster and thus he should take the trophy home.Macster and Tich - Copy

It was also noted that since Macster’s return from his European tour he has figured in 3 out of 3 team events for the naga.

In the winner’s circle was the team playing alongside Macster and Tich of Scott and Hubba, who only just managed to beat Girdy and Tommy by ½ a point to don the tweeds.Scott and Hubba - Copy

Joe doing a poor impression of the absent Scott

So delighted with his win that only a few minutes had passed after he had walked off the 18th that Hubba felt the burning desire to get in touch with the absent Barra (reporter) to share the news of his victory, looking for an early editorial on the website.

Nearest the pins on the day went to Redder 5th, Koala 8th and 12th, Dave 16th.

Usually at this time of the year the conversation quickly turns to handicap management as we near the marquee event of the year. Some get it right, some do just enough to hold their status quo or even sneak a cheeky slide.

Hubba and Scott both earned a one shot cut going from 23 to 22 and 14 to 13 respectively. Macster and Tich eased themselves out a shot with Tich out to 20 and Macster out to 49, staring perilously at the dreaded 50.

For event management, in the season’s absence of Winker, the club stepped in with pizzas alongside Ryan’s cheesecake and ice-cream.

Round 5 – Sunday, 25th January, 2026

Berwick Montuna @ 8.06 am

Format: 4 ball ambrose

A welcome return to Berwick Montuna for the MGC, with the event shifted to a drier time of the year, it was in fine condition and the tricky layout seemed to be enjoyed by all.

The main organiser and course bookee Hubba, once again chose a fixture date he couldn’t attend. It’s looking like the absentee register is going to play a big part in the naga of the year battle.

A very welcome return to the fold was Clayton since his recent absence. Also filling in for the day, it was nice to have big Kev on board. These two were to have a big bearing in the day’s results.

On the day, the tricky course layout proved a bridge too far for team Joe and his merry men, Tich, Kev and Billy Mac, who only managed to card a 72, nett score of 60.785, even on a ‘pitch and putt’ course as described by Joe.Joe, Tich, Billy MAc

In the winner’s circle was team Billy Armour with his able teammates of Scott, Ryan and Clayton. With a big enough handicap came home with a 66, nett 54.75.Clayton, Ryan

Nearest the pins went to Koala (4th), Redder (9th), Girdy (13th) and Billy A (18th).

Handicap adjustments were as follows;

Scott 15 to 14,  Billy A. 14 to 13,  Clayton 37 to 36,  Ryan 24 to 23

Joe 13 to 14,  Tich 18 to 19,  Billy Mac 47 to 48,  Kev 11 to 12

As the new handicaps were announced, it was noted that Billy Mac’s handicap was once again on the slide and moving perilously close to the magic 50, resulting in club status being revoked.

It was also noted that the lack of people taking their penance of wearing the unicorn hats following a naga result. It is the responsibility of the person required to wear the hat to seek it out himself on the day.

The club took a few minutes to remember the passing of a past member Garry ‘the skull’ Buick on his 20th anniversary. Koala generously supplying the bevvie for a toast.

The day would finish on a happy note with a few birthday mentions with Girdy, Tommy, Winker and Mitch all celebrating in the month of January. We also had a milestone birthday with baby Koala turning 40.Baby Koala

Round 4: Sunday December 7th 2025

Rowville Lakes    -     8.48am

Format   -  Singles

Rowville Lakes was the venue for the last outing of the calendar year. A few scratching’s had the organisers pulling in the subs, none more than the ever elusive Bob, who graced the lads with a rare and welcome appearance. It didn’t go unnoticed that the course organiser, Hubba had booked the golf on the wrong day and thus couldn’t play himself.

The course was in reasonable condition, with the greens and fairways fairly decent but the same couldn’t be said for the tee boxes. Overall, decent value for the club.

As the lads congregated prior to tee off, Joe was quick to lay some groundwork for an upcoming unsuccessful round of golf, reeling off a number of ailments and injuries.

It was to be quite early on the front nine that it was “head, shoulders, knees and toes” for Joe as a medical emergency was called at the half way point and Joe had to head home to rest up.

It would group two of Billy A., Redder and Girdy leading the way in the scoring stakes, all finishing in the top three, with Girdy prevailing to don the tweed with a score of 36 points.GirdyAt the other end, for most of the back nine, group three were caught up in a shootout for the naga. As the full compliment of players returned to the clubhouse, this proved not to be the case as Baby Koala lodged a poor 22 points for his days’ work to take the naga prize home for Christmas.Baby KoalaAs a result, handicap adjustments had Girdy cut from 8 to 6, Baby Koala easing out from 21 to 22, Tich 17 to 18 and Ryan 23 to 24.

Nearest the pins went to Girdy (6th), Redder (8th), Billy A. (10th) and John B. (13th).

The secret six was a tie between Redder, Scott and Tich all with 12 points each.

Event management was ably handled by Redder and Barra, dishing up festive sausages and mash with a delectable onion gravy. Followed by birthday cake and ice cream.cakeThe last game of the year would see the lads celebrate Redder’s upcoming 50th birthday. A custom cake, birthday card and a gift donation by the club would put a beaming smile on the big man’s dish.Red cakeRed candlescard front

Round 3: Sunday, 2nd November, 2025

Lang Lang   -   8.00 am tee off

Format   -   4 ball ambrose

With several players away on holiday or on the injured list a smaller field of 12 took to Lang Lang for the first team event of the season, although due to a late arrival a singles event was hastily being planned but Scott arrived on time to allow the designated format to take place.

With the withdrawal of Winker and Clayton, and inclusions of Stork and John, Team 2 started the day bookies favourite and with a club record low handicap of 7.375 this proved to be the case. In a rare display there was no hassle with drives, or having to take a drive in an unfavourable position as “it would be their best of the day”, if anything the hassle was deciding which good drive to take. Although the team needed to finish under par to have any chance of winning, 3 under was enough to finish up with 59.625. This could have been lower if not for Stork stating the team would finish without a bogie on the 3rd last hole, only to bogie the next.

LL winners

With Team 2 out in front it was up to Team 1 and 3 to fight it out for NAGA honours, with both teams having to overcome adversity before or during the round. Team 1, captained by Girdy had to move down the order to give Scott time to compose himself, and with Billy Mac coming of the Scottish seniors tour they were up against it. Team 3, captained by Billy A had a disaster during the round, with his much-loved lady driver falling apart and the team struggled to recover. Eyewitness account by Koala stating the shot in question would fall into the combover category if the ground was a bit softer.

Unfortunately for Team 1 the demotion down the order was too much to take and they fell just short carding 71 and finishing with 59.875. Team 3 carded 70 and came in just ahead with 59.75. This may well be the tightest finish in MGC history with only 0.25 separating the teams, showing the handicaps very rarely get it wrong.

Round 2:  Sunday, 28th September, 2025

Bayviews  -  8.00 am tee off

Format – 4 ball ambrose   singles

Round 2 of the season and the first team event of the season had to be postponed due to late call off and no fill in available. We shall endeavour to try round 3.

Back to Bayviews it was. Fine weather was forecast, but an early shower was to greet us on arrival at Rosebud, but it was soon to pass by tee time.

A few of the members were thrown by the late switch of format now that the safety net of a team event was withdrawn. Others felt the shackles of being handcuffed to numpties would allow for some exquisite golfing expression.

This was not the case for one of our highly ranked club golfers, Stork. But for some late mail the big man was set to head to Lang Lang, a mere 85kms to where he was supposed to be.

Rattled he was, carding a poor 9 points for the front 9. Although he dug deep on the return, a total of 25 points for the day could on mean one thing, NAGA.Stork

The MGC history pages would also show that stopping at headquarters on his way home to receive his awards, is something Stork was not willing to participate in.

In the winner’s circle was last year’s player of the year Clayton. Strolled round the course with consummate ease to lodge a scorecard of 40 points (with 2 outs) beating Joe in a countback.Clayton

Clayton was later to declare he’d set a handicap target of 30 by seasons end.

Nearest the pins on the day were as follows; hole 3 – Girdy, hole 6 – Barra, hole 11 – Barra, hole 15 – Tich and hole 17 – Joe.

Secret six was won by Clayton with 15 points.

Handicap adjustments as follows; Clayton 39 to 37, red 12 to 13, Hubba 22 to 23 and Stork 11 to 12.

A fine spread laid out from the event management team with chicken curry and rhubarb and apple crumble to follow hmmmm

Round 1: Sunday, 31st August, 2025

Brighton

format – stableford        tee-off 8.00am

Brighton was the course of choice to start the season. History shows it’s a high handicapper’s paradise. Unfortunately, our two highest handicappers, Clayton and Macster were out of town for this one, opportunity lost one feels.

With Clayton in Darwin on the Australian Seniors tour and Macster finishing of his European campaign fulfilling sponsors commitments, it left a depleted squad of twelve to start the season. The course was reasonable coming out of the winter season but still threw up its usual challenges.

These challenges came thick and fast for Taffy, turning after nine with a mere 8 points on his card. This was the lowest of the day and at the bottom of the leader board is where he stayed. Although a minor improvement on the back nine of 13, the damage was done and it was never going to be enough to avoid the first NAGA of the season, totaling 21 points.flinders-Naga

The battle for the Tweed proved a non-event as Hubba stormed away from the field with considerable ease. Just to emphasise, Redder carded a respectable score of 31 points in second place. Hubba had that covered by hole 13, with 5 holes up his sleeve for some exhibition stuff to bring it home with 38 points.IMG_0575

Nearest the pins went to Billy A. (3rd), Koala (6th), Joe (8th), no takers on 11th, Baby Koala (13th) and Redder (17th).

Secret six went to Hubba with 12 points.

Back at the club the event management team of Joe and Girdy was splintering. As the members were commenting on the delay of the lunch while waiting for Joe, Girdy was quick to distance himself from said team to ensure he was blameless. However, the quality of the meal was quick to quieten the restless troops.

The results meant Hubba was cut from 24 to 22. Taffy eased out from 19 to 20 and Tommy from 28 to 29.
